What is Movember?
If you are wondering what a moustache has to do with men's health, then you need to know about Movember.
Movember is a global movement that aims at 'changing the face of men's health' and it literally does so, thanks to thousands of volunteers who, at the beginning of November, sign up with a clean shaved face and commit to grow a moustache and raise awareness for the next 30 days. The very name is, in fact, derived from the words moustache and November, and the whole initiative was elaborated to push men to talk more, amongst themselves, about crucial health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health.
These diseases are, unfortunately, all very common and diffused among men of all ages but they are rarely acknowledged or talked about, and often those who suffer from them tend to not open up with their friends. Changing this attitude, according to the founders, would improve knowledge and, as we all know, sound information leads to a growth of consciousness.
Founded in 2003 in Australia, the Movember foundation is today a global men's health charity, currently officially operating in 21 countries. It all started as a small scale, local initiative in Melbourne where a group a friends thought of associating the timeline of a moustache growing experience with a period of awareness raising amongst their friends and acquaintance.
Growing slowly but steadily, the Movember foundation has raised a total of £345 million plus, used to fund 832 programmes all aimed at creating an everlasting impact on how men deal with health issues, within themselves and with the outside world. As a direct prostate cancer and testicular cancer research has received a massive boost in recent years.
