Tips to keep your hair shiny and healthy under the sun
Great looking hair has to healthy and lustrous. However, hair at times can often take on a dull look and this can be due to our lifestyle, diet – which should be rich in omega-3 and vitamins like B-6, B-12, and folic acid – or simply a long period of stress or fatigue can often affect it.
A long vacation at the beach or just staying out in the sun more than usual can also affect its shine and luster and leave it dry, brittle and faded, if it’s dyed.
Here are a few simple tips to avoid damage from UV rays, but also from salt and chlorine water.
The most simple way to protect your hair from the sun's rays is to wear a hat, a baseball cap or even a scarf, maybe copying Dolce & Gabbana’s very chic Sicilian look, but since your hair will hang down you’ll have to protect the rest of it with other methods.
Before going into the sun, try putting a little olive oil or joboba oil onto your hands and then pass them lightly through the strands - avoiding the scalp area – and concentrating on the ends.
The oil will act as a natural filter against the sun and keep it from drying out, especially the ends, that are more prone to dryness.
Every time you take a dip in the sea or pool, remember to rinse your hair as soon as possible in order to remove the salt or chlorine residues or your hair will absorb them.
If you don’t have any oil available, you can make your own UV hair protection by using your sunscreen lotion. Just dilute 2 teaspoons of your sunscreen in a cup of water and then spray it on your hair during the day.
If you do happen to already have sun damaged hair, try putting mayonnaise on it and leaving it on about 20 minutes to half an hour before washing it off, this helps restore luster and shine.
Another natural treatment is mixing olive oil, mayonnaise and an egg together. You’ll have to leave this mixture in for 2 to 3 hours and then rinse out thoroughly, without using shampoo or adding conditioner, and this can be repeated once or twice a week, and it will add much needed moisture to your hair.
