Prevention and repair of split ends

Blow drying, curling irons and heated rollers can dry your hair just like wind and sun dries your skin. Not eating enough healthy foods with fresh vegetables, proteins, vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids all affect the look and feel of hair. The best way to stop split ends is preventive care. If you change to a healthier diet and still find you have a few splits, try these repair tips.

Hair care


The best way to untangle wet hair is by using wide-toothed combs. Some people may need the strength of a brush to get through thick, heavy, long hair. If that is the case, use a brush made with natural bristles and not stiff plastic bristles that tear and damage.

Prevent damage to your hair from sun and chlorine. If you work outside or enjoy outdoor activities, take the time to put on a hat for protection. Wind and sun dry hair, and the more brittle it becomes the more likely it will tear or rip. A cheap swimming cap could work wonders for the looks of your hair in preventing chlorine damage.

Be mindful of hot hair treatments like hot curlers, curling irons and constant blow drying. These are all great for styling, but they really do dry and damage hair.

Use a good shampoo, conditioner and creme rinse. A quality shampoo should cleanse your hair without stripping natural oils. A good creme rinse prevents tangles and makes hair easier to comb with less ripping action. Try a once a month deep conditioner to re-energise hair, soften and shine.


If you find you already have a bunch of split ends, give some thought to a trim from a good stylist. Long scraggly ends are not attractive and your appearance will be improved with a cut to clean up damaged hair.

There is not really such a thing as repairing split ends. The hair has already been damaged, but you can use commercial products and home remedies to improve the looks of your hair and damaged ends will not be so noticeable.

Stir a tsp. of sweet-smelling almond oil with an egg yolk into a small bowl. After washing your hair apply this mixture deep into your scalp and hair. Leave this remedy on for 30 minutes. Rinse your hair with warm or cool water.

Another natural remedy to make hair shine and reduce the damaged look is a honey treatment. Mix together one egg yolk, two tbsp. olive oil and one tsp. of honey. Thoroughly massage the mixture into your hair, and leave it on for 30 minutes. Remove the mixture by rinsing with water and shampooing hair as usual.

Living a healthy lifestyle can improve the looks of your hair. Eating a healthy diet with plenty of protein and vitamins gives your hair what it needs to become healthy and strong. Healthy hair in good condition does not tear and develop split ends as quickly as dry, brittle hair.
