Basic skin type information

The skin is the largest organ in the body and plays a crucial role. It provides protective cover for internal organs against the elements and other external hazards. Because of the importance of the skin, it is vital that you care and protect it as well. The first step in any natural skin care program is to gather basic skin type information and establish your own skin type. Generally, facial skin can fall in either one of five basic skin types.

Normal skin type

Normal skin is in a balanced state where it is not too dry or too oily. This skin type produces sebum at a moderate rate and looks consistently moist, plump and vibrant. Sebum is the oily secretion of skin that lubricates and provides some protection against bacteria. Toning, moisturising and cleansing normal skin greatly benefits and improves it's overall condition.

Dry skin type

Dry skin does not produce enough sebum to keep the skin naturally moist, plump and vibrant. This skin type has inactive or under active oil glands that cause it to appear dull, feel dry and itchy and sometimes get quite sensitive. Dry skin benefits from regular hydration from the inside with fresh water and from the outside with mist. Rich hydrating lotions and creams also moisturise and benefit this skin type.

Oily skin type

Oily skin produces too much sebum that causes the skin to constantly appear shiny, have a greasy, slippery texture and large, clogged pores. Because the skin glands produce too much sebum, this skin type is prone to acne. Acne occurs when excess sebum is trapped inside the skin resulting in the development of pus-filled lesions known as comedones. Oily skin, however, generally remains more supple and younger looking than most other skin types over time. This skin type benefits from periodic clay masks and herbal steam treatments.

Sensitive skin types

Sensitive skin is prone to adverse reactions to environmental conditions and synthetically manufactured products like artificial colours and fragrance oils. Sensitive skin can be normal, dry or oily and requires special attention to keep in good condition. This skin type information makes some people think sensitive skin more of a skin condition than a skin type. This skin benefits a lot from natural skin care products and gentle treatments like essential oils and light steaming.

Combination skin type

Combination skin type has both oily and dry areas on skin. The dry areas appear as patches around the eyes, mouth and on the cheeks with the oily areas appear mostly on the forehead, chin and nose. Combination skin can be quite difficult to manage because different areas on the skin require different attention. However, skin type information shows regular assessment of the skin to determine the best products to use for the different areas of the face is very effective and beneficial to this skin type.
