Italian mafiosi have long held fascination, partly because of their image; guns and glamour are always a potent combination. But at Palermo jail, they are fighting to combat this, by banning their inmates from wearing designer suits.
Rita Barbera, the new governor at Palermo prison told Vogue, 'The popular image of this jail is linked to the silk suits of godfathers and we need to cancel that image. We need to cancel class differences and the showing off of status, power and wealth.'
One jailbird wife exclaimed, 'My husband will be left naked. He only has designer clothes, and that's not because he's flashy but because they last much longer and are better quality. Why humiliate him? Why force us to buy clothes at street markets?'
Labels which are now banned include Gucci, Prada and Versace. A dark day for Italian gangster fashion...
