Return of a vintage sport: bike polo

Invented in 1891 by Irish racing cyclist Richard J Mecredy, the sport that had society enraptured during the 1930s is experiencing a revival in London.

Bike polo is proving something of a hit on British shores after one of the group who kicked off the trend here saw the sport being played in Manhattan. The Brick Lane players are not alone. Similar groups are sprouting up across the UK - Manchester, Brighton and Oxford included.

And how does one play Bike Polo? Teams of three-a-side cycle towards the ball as fast as they can, then its the first to score five points by getting the ball into the goal.

Seems like an interesting urban alternative to the classic gentleman's sport...no doubt Pimms and lemonade will be replaced with a pint of finest ale.
