Party-season beauty treatments: when to save and when to splurge
With just three weeks to go until Christmas, our mind is literally in a whirl: the party season is kicking off very soon and we still haven't had the time to mentally and physically prepare for it. Plus there are still all the presents to buy and sometimes is difficult to decide between making someone special happy or treat ourselves to expensive beauty treatments.
Saving money on beauty often involves some DIY and the results depends on our own abilities. The difficult part is to decide when to go professional and when to do it ourselves. To make things easier we have wrote a list of essential party treatments that will make you look amazing, but will also guide you on when to save and when to splurge.
Do it yourself
Face: prepare the skin for the treatment by cleansing it in order to remove any make-up residue, grime and dirt. You can use a gentle cleanser, such as Eau Thermal Avene Soapless Gel Cleanser – 200ml, £ 8.25, perfect for sensitive and delicate skin. Then steam cleanse your face (careful if you suffer from dermatitis) by pouring boiling water with essential oils into a bowl and inhale the steam. It will unclog pores and make the skin more responsive to the treatment. Apply L'Oreal Paris Revitalift Laser X3 Renew Super Serum, £16.66, it will target wrinkles, even skin-tone, plump and smooth the surface.
Waxing: we bought the perfect frock to show off our gorgeous pins, but we have to make sure that everything is tidy and neat! It's a good idea to wax one or two days before the party, in order to give our skin the time to heal after the treatment. You can do it from home with Veet EasyWax Electrical Roll-On Kit Legs & Arms 50ml, £24.99, with an easy roll-on applicator it removes hair as short as 2mm. Skin remains smooth for up to 4 weeks.
Pedicure: It doesn't matter if it's winter, this season is all about showing off, and your feet will take centre stage with those amazing stiletto you bought. Give your feet some tender loving care: use Revlon Pedi Expert, £ 6.99, micro-files to gently remove hard skin, then soak them in warm water and essential oils to soften them and relax. Apply a thick layer of Scholl Intensive Night Treatment 50ml, £6.12, wear a pair of cotton socks and leave it to penetrate deep in the skin whilst you're sleeping. The next day your feet will thank you.
Eyebrows: unless you're an expert, book yourself a professional eyebrow shaping session. There are different methods to choose from, according to your tastes and skin, from threading to wax and plucking and usually the prices are quite fair (up to £20). A good eyebrow shape immediately lift tired eyes and gives better proportions to your face.
Manicure: it's important to show beautiful hands and a good manicure will give our nails the wow factor during the party season. If you are blessed with healthy, long nails, opt for a Silk Wrap, which will protect them from splitting and avoid chipping varnish for up to three weeks. Keep your hands moisturised and smooth with Neutrogena Hand Cream Unscented, 50g, £3.59.
Tanning: spray tan gives an instant glow, help concealing or minimising imperfections and hides those bits and bops that we are not so proud of. A professional spray tan guarantees perfect results, leaving your skin radiant and avoiding streaks, white patches and orange palms. Book your salon treatment the day before the party, as it takes some hours for the results to fully show.
