Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana showed their new collection for D&G, the younger sister label to Dolce & Gabanna, in Milan yesterday. As usual for D&G it was bright, bold, young and fun with models leaping down the catwalk to the remixed sound of Prince, but this show had one big twist. As the audience of fashion journos were leaving, pumped up from the feel-good vibes on the runway, they received an email from the D&G PR informing them that Dolce & Gabbana are shutting the D&G label to focus on their main collection.
Whilst the move may have a come as a big surprise to many there is no denying the extrovert Italian duo have let the label go out with a bang. According to the Guardian the announcement worked hard to sound upbeat, saying: ‘We are going through a very happy moment of our lives. From the upcoming seasons, D&G will become part of Dolce & Gabbana, giving even more strength and energy to our collections.’
Some retailers are saying it’s a strong move as there was not enough difference between the two lines, which confused consumers. One Italian retailer told WWD: "The two lines sort of cannibalised each other. There was some confusion surrounding them, and the D&G pricing was too close to that of Dolce & Gabbana.
We’re off to find some vintage D&G on eBay now…
