There was chaos at the Balenciaga show at Paris Fashion Week yesterday as the fashion world elite were forced to stand during the entire show after their benches gave way beneath them. Aren’t these people supposed to weigh nothing?!
According to the Evening Standard guests including Salma Hayek, Anna Wintourand Grace Coddington were practically sitting on each others’ laps in order to get a glimpse of one of the most sought-after shows in the fashion calendar. Unfortunately it seems no one noticed the benches buckling in the middle as guest after guest crammed themselves into the space. Suddenly one bench disappeared from beneath its starry occupants, sending several of the most high profile faces in fashion plummeting to the floor. This was quickly followed by a second, then a third, before nervous Balenciaga PRs rushed down the catwalk and requested everyone to stand throughout the show.
Cathy Horyn, fashion critic of the New York Times, tweeted: "Benches cracking at Balenciaga as guests leap up. A second one just carted off. Now a third broke and nervous buzz starts, as in 'Me next?'" Former editor of French Vogue Carine Roitfeld also fell victim to the seating mishap but, says Horyn: "Carine slipped as the bench begin to bend but she didn't fall on the floor - she's far too graceful for that."
Putting aside the unfortunate incident, the show was a success with many saying that the crowd would have given it a standing ovation, had they not already been forced into one.
