Eighty-seven hopefuls from all around the world will be lining up on November 9th at the Crocus City Hall in Moscow to be judged in the 2013 Miss Universe pageant.
"This will be one of the biggest and most beautiful Miss Universe events ever. It is only fitting that the worlds most iconic and premier beauty contest will take place in Russia's most premier venue, Crocus City Hall," said Donald Trump, who owns the Miss Universe Organization.
This will be the 62nd edition of the international competition that was started by American company Catalina Swimwear who originally founded and sponsored the Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss Universe pageants.
According to the Miss Universe website: “These women are savvy, goal-oriented and aware. The delegates who become part of the Miss Universe Organization display those characteristics in their everyday lives, both as individuals, who compete with hope of advancing their careers, personal and humanitarian goals, and as women who seek to improve the lives of others.”
In 2012, the organization agreed to allow transgender women to enter their beauty pageant following a dispute in Canada with Jenna Talackova.
The contestants will be judged in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and of course the much maligned interviews.
The hosts for the two-hour event that will be broadcast in 190 countries, will be Thomas Roberts and Melanie Brown.
Roberts is a journalist and the host of MSNBC Live and he is replacing Andy Cohen who decided to boycott the pageant after co-hosting the event in 2011 and 2012, due to Russia’s anti-gay laws.
For Melanie Brown, who is better known to the public as the former Mel B of the Spice Girls, this is a return to the Miss Universe stage after co-hosting the pageant in Vietnam in 2008.
As in all contests, there are the usual rumors of who is going to win the crown, and three names have already cropped up and could replace Olivia Culpo of the USA, who won the title in 2012.
The winning bets are on Miss Philippines: Ariella Arida, who of late has been embroiled in a controversy regarding her negative remarks against Latinas, then there is Miss Austria 2013, Doris Hofmann and Miss Australia 2013, Olivia Wells.
Representing Great Britain will be 21-year old Amy Willerton, who is a commercial model and is a direct descendant of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey.
The first event for the pageant was a photo shoot for an Italian lingerie brand, Yamamay swimwear, where the contestants posed in white bikinis at the Crowne Plaza Moscow World Trade Centre hotel.
